Children's Books and Grown-Up Drinks

All of y'all are cordially invited to the first-ever New York City Children's Books Bloggers' Drinks Night on Thursday, September 28, 2006. The fun starts at 6 p.m. at Sweet and Vicious at 5 Spring Street, between Elizabeth St. and the Bowery here in Soho. The idea for the drinks night originated with my friend Jill, who like all right-thinking children's-book lovers is a fan of fusenumber8; she suggested Betsy and I plan a get-together for the kidlit blogging community, and darned if we didn't think that was a brilliant idea.

So come writers and illustrators, bloggers and blog-readers, agents, editors, and marketers, children's-books lovers one and all! We'll discuss pressing children's- and YA-literature issues like "Edward Tulane: Christ figure or beleaguered bunny?", the casting for The Golden Compass movie, "What's the best thing you've read recently?", and of course a healthy dose of juicy gossip. I'm personally hoping a few of Betsy's Hot Men of Children's Literature make an appearance.

Book bloggers: Feel free to share this on your feeds, and of course please come if you can. (We'll all have to wear our URLs on nametags or something.) Hope to see you there!

  1. Alas! I have band practice. Making music holds little charm compared with the company of you lovely ladies (and the hot men, of course).

  2. I would buy an airplane ticket just to discuss "Edward Tulane"

Jeepers, if my kid ever EVER EVER saw the picture of the stuffed bunny with the nail through ears and the barbwire... Sheesh! Nightmares for years! He's still talking about the time that a teddy bear got blown up on Battlebots. It really bothered him.

I saw the book at Barnes and Noble and was a little disturbed by the illustrations. It’s one thing to read about something but another to see it in soft pastel colors and gristly graphic detail. Some things are safer left to the imagination.

Let me know what the consensus is…

And have a beverage for me. Just keep in mind the website says for some unexplained reason that they do not make mojitos, caiphirinas or caipiroscas.

    Have fun!

  3. Phillip Pullman in the hands of Nicole Kidman... I don't know if I'm excited or scared about that one :)

  4. No caipirinhas? What's a get-blogether without caipirinhas? Have fun!

  5. Wish I could be there! Could you guys just move it to Cali? Or, better yet, let's have an additional get-together in L.A. and y'all can fly out here for that one too.

If fuel/airline ticket prices weren't soaring right now, I'd consider cruising out there for the opportunity to see some of Betsy's "Hot Men.." Oh, and to see you guys, of course!

  6. Wish it was on a weekend when the babysitter is available. Some of have to stay home reading children's books to our own little ones. Enjoy!

  7. Hey! I made your blog!

Now I feel slightly responsible for the success of this drinks get together...I'll spread the word and will certainly be there.

(And oh please have the bloggers wear blognametags!)

  8. Hey Cheryl Klein,

This sounds great! I used to organize a
drinks night like this at Harper called Booze+. But in resent month I have slacked getting it together.

I will try an be there!
