Three Things Seen Only in the Midwest, and Three Seen Only in New York

1. Flower chains, and the time and peace to make them;

2. Meals of entirely one color tone (Note: This was a dinner I fixed for myself and does not accurately represent my mother's cooking);

3. Me wearing a Garth Brooks concert shirt while playing croquet.

1. The Brooklyn Bridge at sunset;

2. A Dixie Chicks concert at 8:30 in the morning;

3. A dyspeptic pigeon.

  1. Where did you get the GB T-shirt? Is it one from your high school days? Or was it lent to you?

  2. Flower-chaining, I do believe, is a Midwestern-born talent. We once challenged ourselves at recess to make one long enough to pull the other end all the way up to our classroom while still connected to the unpicked clover flower in the grass. We even got the boys to help us and we made it and gave it to our second grade teacher.

    I'm sure she was much impressed.

  3. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO JEALOUS that you saw the Dixie Chicks! Their new album ROCKS and they did NOT sell out. .. they went even more to be who THEY ARE. . and so I LOVE THAT! And their music is simple and complete. . .I must see them myself!

  4. The shirt is actually my mom's. In 1996, she won a contest sponsored by one of the Kansas City country radio stations for two free tickets (plus transportation and hotel) to a GB concert in Atlanta, and she got the t-shirt in commemoration. My dad tried to convince me that it looked good and I needed to bring it back to New York with me, but I declined.

  5. Another "only in NY" mention: Thousands of energetic sailors enjoying the city each year during Fleet Week (which is now). I never saw that growing up in Arkansas.

  7. Tell your mom that I too won tickets to a Garth Brooks concert with transportation from Canada and hotel! It was the Sevens Tour, opening night in Dallas, Texas with Tricia Yearwood the opening act. My t-shirt is white!

  8. Hey! My husband has that same shirt! Except it's from the KC concert, the second time he passed through town.

  9. You should have brought the t-shirt back to New York. Sometimes you need a little country and sometimes you need a little rock-n-roll.
